Taif

Taif
A popular summer spot for Saudis due to its cool temperatures, it is still worth a visit. It is also on the way to almost every place east or south of Jeddah. At the top of the escarpment there are baboons and Saudis to entertain you, and markets further towards the city centre.

Directions (from Jeddah)

  • Join the Jeddah/Makkah highway heading towards Makkah.

  • Assuming you're not a Muslim, take the "Christian Highway" to join up with the Makkah/Taif highway.

  • There is a checkpoint at the bottom of the escarpment.

  • Head up the escarpment, the road starts as dual carriageway, becoming a single carriageway part of the way up.

  • At the top of the escarpment the road becomes dual carriageway again, then following the signs to the city centre.

Tips

  • Remember the checkpoint at the bottom of the escarpment.

  • The Wacky Races is the best way of describing the drive up the escarpment, so watch out for loony driving!!! Be very very careful (but treat it like a racetrack and it's great fun!).
